eBay removes Canadian town’s listing of sperm whale carcass

Category : Uncategorized

Thursday, May 8, 2014

Citing violations of its policy regarding “Marine mammal items”, eBay terminated an online listing on Monday by the town of Cape St. George, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, for a 40 ft (12 m) sperm whale carcass reportedly beached upon its shores about a week prior.

With an initial asking price of 99 cents, bidding for the carcass reportedly rose to C$238.03 within 15 bids. Reports variously state the final price of the whale, prior to the removal of the listing from the auction site on Monday at about 2:30pm, was C$2,025 or C$2,075. Listed in eBay’s “really weird” category, the carcass was considered by eBay to be an example of “items made from marine mammals regardless of when the product was made”, which are prohibited as per site rules.

Following a council meeting on Sunday in the town of 950 residents, Cape St. George’s mayor, Peter Fenwick, put the whale up on the auction site in a bid to have it removed from the town’s premises, citing a lack of cooperation from provincial and federal government officials on the matter. “It’s your problem, you solve it”, Fenwick recounted to The Globe and Mail (TGaM) as the response he received from them. Apart from eBay, Kijiji was also suggested as another avenue by which to sell the carcass.

Fenwick told CTV News, several years prior another sperm whale measuring 15 ft was beached in the area, but disappeared without incident, an act Fenwick attributed to be the work of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. “This time”, he remarked, “the authorities have told us that it’s our whale, it’s our responsibility to get rid of it.”

On putting the carcass for sale, Fenwick remarked, “We knew we had to do something with it and this seemed to be the least expensive way of disposing of it.” In a news release, Fenwick highlighted a possible use for the carcass, particularly its bones. “The 40 foot sperm whale will make a spectacular exhibit once the fat and muscle is removed, and the town is asking museums and other organizations that could use a whale skeleton to contact the town for further details.”

On retaining the whale himself, Fenwick stated, “As a town we would dearly love to keep the whale and put it on exhibit in the town but the cost of such a venture would be hard to justify.” Fenwick told TGaM the whale was “in half decent shape”. “This one looks like it died very recently and hasn’t decomposed much”, which Fenwick suggested elsewhere was due to the whale’s present location, partially submerged in near-freezing water. However, Fenwick noted its close proximity to a residential area, saying homeowners who lived there were “very interested in seeing the whale gone.”

eBay was not the only organization who barred the sale from taking place. “We also got threatened by the federal department of the environment, and told to pull the ad off or they would prosecute us”, said Fenwick on the opposition he said he received from Environment Canada, which viewed the sale as contravening a federal act designed to protect endangered species. “I received a call from the federal department of the environment saying that you’re not allowed to sell any parts of sperm whales, even if they’re dead.” he added. “So I said, ‘Oh that’s very good, I’m glad to hear that, now can you send somebody over here to get rid of it for us?'” Fenwick’s request was met with a negative response from Environment Canada.

“They’ve got to sort it out somehow. The uncertainty means it just sort of sits there and rots.” Once decomposition sets in, Fenwick remarked the carcass would become a “real nuisance”. “I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a whale that’s been rotting on the beach for a couple of months — actually sometimes you can’t see it for the clouds of flies around it — but you can smell it for about a mile”, he added.

On finding alternate means to dispose of the carcass, Wayne Ledwell, a member of Newfoundland’s Whale Release and Strandings, suggested the whale be towed out to a remote area. “They need to do that right away, when they come in and they’re fresh,” said Ledwell. “No one wants to go touch them … everything becomes gooey and slippery and you can’t stand up on the whale and it gets on your boots and you can’t get the smell off and then you go home and the dog rolls in it and you get it in your kitchen and you curse the whales, and you curse the government and … it becomes a mess.” Fenwick said they’d considered the idea, enlisting a local fisherman who, however, judged his engine too small for the job.

Previously, blue whale carcasses washed ashore in the towns of Trout River and Rocky Harbour, located about 150 km further north, and were taken by Royal Ontario Museum for preservation of the skeletons. Fenwick suggested the sperm whale carcass in his town might also meet a similar fate, as the sperm whale’s status as the largest toothed whale might prove to be a drawing attraction for such a facility.

Regarding what he plans to do next with the carcass, Fenwick said “If we’re not allowed to sell it, we’re willing to drop our 99 cent price down to a zero.” He said he hoped some eBay bidder stays interested in the whale. “We’ll be glad to talk to them about giving them the whale. We’re hoping that’s not illegal.” He also said he hoped the publicity from the town’s predicament, which garnered national attention, and its unusual means of finding a solution, would draw in someone interested in taking the whale off his hands at their own expense.

Should the whale fall under new ownership, Fenwick advised it be moved away from the town to a beach devoid of people, and the blubber left as food for seagulls, insects, and other predators. He estimated “It’ll probably take a year or so to get down to the skeleton.” As monetary gain was reportedly not what the town cared about, Fenwick was willing to offer the carcass for free, though one report noted money raised from the listing could have gone towards the building of a skate park.

The listing on eBay, as put up by Fenwick, read:

This 40 foot sperm whale rolled up on the beach last week. The actual seller is the town of Cape St. George which is responsible for disposing of it before it starts to decay. Once the fat and flesh is removed you have a spectacular 40 foot skeleton of the largest toothed whale in the world, great for museums and other attractions. To prevent it rotting in the town it can be towed to isolated beaches on the Port au Port Peninsula to allow the seagulls and other birds to remove the flesh. Call 709-644-2290 or 709-649-7070 for more details.

Please note the successful bidder will have to remove the whale within 30 days

The Indian Away From Home

Submitted by: Anwesha Bose

For a rational and sane Indian, a debate surely can t classify as a reason good enough to breach the travel advisory issued by the Ministry of External Affairs for its citizens against travelling to Pakistan, as a part of our government s diplomatic offensive against our neighbours with an aim to make the latter act on terror which we believe is being harboured there. Call me stupid, call me fearless, call me anything you want but I decided to make the trip to Delhi s twin- Lahore. And guess what, it was a grand success!! The following account will tell you what happened and my views over certain things.

Whilst on the Delhi-Lahore bus service, I met numerous individual from various parts of India who have family living across the border. Still Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs in India marry their children into families living across the border. The tears that I witnessed rolling down the cheeks of my fellow brave heart passengers when they met their relatives are very hard to classify. They are tears of happiness but still full of the grief that stems from the difficulties that they ve had to face because of this line that has now become a barrier. Often people wait in excess of 2 years to get the VISA. Sometimes even more! It could stretch to time unknown.

During my stay with University College Lahore, hospitality at par with our own Atithi Devo Bhava was offered to me . Every Pakistani at the event went out of his/her way to make me feel at home. Koi Masla to nahin hai naa?? A question that I answered maybe a hundred times a day. How can I possibly forget that glowing smile that I received each time I went past somebody, simply because I belonged to India?. Not to mention the respect I received for being a part of an India on the path of progress and on course to becoming a global superpower.

Despite today s tumultuous times that are characterised by venomous statements that politicians of both countries make against each other, Indians continue to receive a red carpet treatment in Pakistan (and vice-versa). So is it justified for the Indian state to brand every Pakistani as a terrorist and as a sworn enemy of India as has been exemplified by the actions of Raj Thackeray s MNS in Maharashtra and the restrictive VISA policy of the Indian state towards ordinary Pakistanis. The converse applies to Pakistan also. Clearly the problem is concentrated at the political level but politicians transcend its effect onto the level of the common man. We must realise that interest groups have emerged in both countries whose sustenance is dependent solely on continued conflict between the two countries and must not seen as representative of the people at large. We might not be able to erase the line that exists between us, but must take steps to ensure that the line ceases to remain the barrier it has now become. .

Trade Show Displays: How To Stand Out From The Crowd

byadmin

Trade shows are essential in many industries, and setting up effective trade show displays in NYC can help your business stand out from the competition. However, coming up with a strong idea is essential for having an impact. Here are a few trade show booth ideas to consider before departing for your next show.

Understated Design

When many people think of trade show displays in NYC, they think of bright colors and eye-catching elements. However, an alternative, and often more affordable, concept is to create an understated display that lets your products stand out. Ensure your text is easy to read and make sure graphical elements displaying your products provide an uncluttered motif that lets your products’ best attributes stand out.

Interactive Design

Walking through a trade show can be an overwhelming experience due to the high concentration of booths and the sheer number of people walking around and talking. One way to impress is to include interactive elements that draw attention. Even a simple prize wheel, for example, can encourage people to stop by your booth and ask a few questions.

Digital Elements

Trade show displays in NYC now often contain digital elements, primarily monitors. However, many of these digital elements are effectively afterthoughts, meant to provide a touch of visual charm. Consider using touchscreens that provide more information than can fit on a poster. If you’re going to include video, ensure it has a professional look. Shorter videos are often the most effective.

Gaining a foothold in nearly any industry is tricky, and networking and potentially gaining new customers at trade shows is a powerful tool. Plan early when preparing for a trade show, and make sure to work with experts. Find professionals who will work with your idea, and make sure to have design elements crafted early so you can correct any problems that arise.

New York Banner Stands serves as a one-stop shop for trade show displays and other elements. Their custom printing services can help companies of all sizes, and their stands and tables help their customers create professional designs at an affordable price point.

French Workers stay at home for Whit Monday

Category : Uncategorized

Monday, May 16, 2005

In France, workers by the millions stayed at home during the Whit Monday holiday despite the government’s cancellation of the traditional Pentecost public holiday. Some acted in defiance of the government’s decision, while some took leave or were put on forced leave by their employers due to uncertainties of public transportation.

Following the 2003 heat wave, which caused the deaths of an estimated 13,000 elderly people in France, the administration of prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin has proposed the suppression of one day of public holiday in order to use the supplemental generated tax for a fund for the caring of the elderly.

Whit Monday was selected because, in normal years, France has several public holidays in May. Furthermore, attendance of religious celebrations is low, so holidays of a religious origin are nowadays generally mere family reunions.

However, the reception of this new working day was mixed. The administration says it promotes solidarity with the elderly. Trade unions and opposition groups argue that the measure is an ill-conceived stunt aimed at hiding the government’s bad handling of the problems of the elderly.

For instance, many remember that in 1956, the government created a tax (the vignette) on motor vehicles, allegedly for funding measures for the elderly. But in 1973, the products of this tax came, as any other tax, into the government’s general fund.

With this measure, the French government intends to raise 2 billion to be donated to a new public establishment, the “national fund for solidarity for autonomy.” The new fund would be chartered to deal with losses of self-sufficiency of elderly or handicapped people. 1.2 billion € are earmarked for elderly people, 0.8 for the handicapped.

Trade unions had called for strikes in urban public transportation and paralyzed traffic in 27 cities, including Clermont-Ferrand, Lille, Montpellier ou Strasbourg. However, SNCF (the national railway operator) did not strike and RATP (the Paris transportation authority) suffered only minor disturbances, though both are normally known for their frequent and disturbing strikes.

SNCF considered the day as a holiday for payroll purposes and instead increased the work day by 1’52”, a measure that majority leader Nicolas Sarkozy considered shocking and contrary to the objectives of the government.

The protests are also widely considered to be motivated by the unpopularity of the administration of president Jacques Chirac and prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin. Recent statistics show a five year-high for unemployment at 10.2%.

This discontent may result in a majority of “no” in the vote for the ratification of the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe.

Planning Perfect Outdoor Weddings Tuscon

Category : Irrigation

byAlma Abell

Your wedding should be something you have always dreamed of. Many girls, and men too although they may not want to admit it, spend years planning exactly how they want their special day to look. There are many different venues from which to choose, and outdoor weddings, Tucson are becoming more and more popular. There are, however, a few things to keep in mind when you are planning an outdoor wedding.

The first is the time of year and the weather you can expect. Perhaps you have always dreamed of a New Year’s Day wedding, but the weather during that time of year may not be conducive to an outdoor wedding. It is best to check traditional weather reports for the past few years, as well as current reports, to get an idea of what to expect. That way you can plan appropriate clothing for the bride and groom, the wedding party, and the guests as well. If it tends to be rainy, you can plan on having a canopy to keep everyone dry. Maybe it is going to be chilly. If so, you can rent some portable column heaters so everyone stays nice and toasty.

Next, think about the time of day you would like your wedding to be. Evening Outdoor Weddings, Tuscon can be gorgeous, especially at a luxurious location such as Reflections at the Buttes. Strategically placed lighting, whether electric or candle light, gives everything a sense of romance and allure. If the wedding is during the day, you will have to choose what kind of natural outdoor backdrop you would like such as a flower garden or perhaps some type of water feature.

After the ceremony itself, the next most important part of any wedding is the reception. If you are having an outdoor wedding, you may want to have an outdoor reception as well. On the other hand, perhaps you and your guests have had enough of nature and want to retire to a luxurious room where you can sit, relax, and celebrate the beginning of your new life. The most important piece of advice is to remember whatever you plan will be perfect. Whether it is outside or inside, when you and your spouse say those two magic words, the location will not matter. The fact that you are simply together in the moment will.

British singer George Michael, 53, dies

Category : Uncategorized

Wednesday, December 28, 2016

George Michael, a well-known British pop singer and songwriter, died on Christmas Day at the age of 53. Michael was found dead at his home in Oxfordshire, England, by boyfriend Fadi Fawaz.

I am in deep shock. I have lost a beloved friend — the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist.

Michael’s publicist released the following statement to People and Entertainment Weekly: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time.” He also reported that Michael had died of heart failure and “passed away peacefully”.

Sir Elton John said via Instagram, “I am in deep shock. I have lost a beloved friend — the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist. My heart goes out to his family and all of his fans.”

George Michael was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in London. Over his multi-decade career, he sold more than 100 million records. Along with co-singer Andrew Ridgeley he became famous as part of the duo band Wham!. Together, Michael and Ridgeley produced several hit songs, such as Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, Freedom, and Last Christmas. In 1985, Wham! was the first Western band to play in China since the beginning of the country’s opening up strategy. Wham! dissolved in 1986. In 1984, Michael recorded the successful single Careless Whisper. Michael was credited as the solo artist in the United Kingdom and as “Wham! featuring George Michael” in the United States. Michael released a hit solo album Faith in 1987, containing hits like I Want Your Sex.

Michael’s life was troubled by both substance abuse and issues with his sexuality. He initially hid his identity as a gay man from his fans, coming out only after a very public arrest for public lewdness in 1998. He would later be arrested for possession of drugs and driving under the influence of drugs. He was sentenced to eight weeks in prison in 2010 for crashing a Range Rover into a storefront while under the influence of drugs and possession of cannabis.

Michael had a history of transforming his negative experiences into art. He wrote White Light about a serious case of pneumonia that led to his hospitalization in 2011, and the music video for Outside, which followed on the heels of his arrest and coming out, showed scenes of a men’s bathroom, a dance club, and men kissing while in police uniforms. He would perform White Light live at the 2012 London Olympics.
