Snow causes disruption in UK

Category : Uncategorized

Thursday, February 8, 2007

Heavy snow has caused disruption in the United Kingdom with airports and schools closed and delays on the road network.

Snowfall was highest near Worcester with 9cms of snow falling. The snow has caused hundreds of school closures and major disruption to airports with Birmingham, London Gatwick and City, Bristol and Cardiff runways closing although these have now re-opened. However the runways at Luton and Stanstead remain closed due to the bad weather.

The road network has also been affected with some snow settling and accidents occurring causing major congestion in some areas, althought gritting by the Highways Agency and local authorities has limited the effect on trunk roads and motorways.

Schools were closed in Birmingham, Solihull and Dudley, while some remained open in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, East Anglia and Wales, Shropshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire.

Drivers are being warned that driving conditions will continue to be adverse and are being advised only to travel if absolutely necessary.

Train services by Midland Mainline and Virgin as well as the London Underground are affected, with delays, reduced services and cancellations.

The overall economic effect of the snow is predicted to cost the British economy approximately £400 million due to loss of work hours.

There has also been loss of power in some areas of Wales including Abergaveny, Llandeilo and Blaenporth.

The snow fall is expected to continue into the evening but may turn to sleet in some areas. Also cold temperature tonight will mean that there is a high chance of ice forming on the road network. Up to 15 cm of snow is expected through the day in some hilly areas but wetter and milder weather is expected over the weekend.

New Jersey jury clears man of five murders over 1978 teens’ disappearance

Category : Uncategorized

Thursday, November 24, 2011

A jury in New Jersey yesterday acquitted a Newark man of murdering five teens who vanished in the city in 1978. The prosecution had contended Lee Anthony Evans trapped the boys in an empty house before burning it down.

Alvin Turner, 16; Melvin Pittman, 17; Randy Johnson, 16; Ernest Taylor, 17; and Michael McDowell, 16 disappeared on August 20, 1978. Recently homicide detectives got involved and in March last year they arrested Evans and his co-accused Philander Hampton. Hampton, Evans’s cousin, had told police in 2008 that the pair were behind the teens’ deaths and, although witnesses placed the boys in Evans’s pickup truck, his testimony alone linked Evans to the mystery.

Evans represented himself through the majority of the case, although he did get his court-appointed lawyer, Olubukola Adetula, to take control of much of the trial’s latter stages. The case has been on trial since October 28. It was Adetula who cross-examined Hampton.

The defense noted the poor record of drug dealer and user Hampton, who has spent time in jail for crimes including theft. He confessed in a plea deal that sees him sentenced to ten years in prison in exchange for his testimony, but will be eligible for parole within months as he has already served most of the two years required by 1978 guidelines.

It’s like someone put you in the oven and burned you up. You can’t undo that.

Hampton testified Evans, who is now 58, burned the quintet alive in revenge after discovering they had broken into his property and stolen a pound of cannabis. Evans often offered odd jobs to the teens and Hampton said Evans brought the youths in two trips to the vacant Camden Street house on the pretense of helping move boxes.

Hampton, who is set to be paid $15,000 by the state to assist his relocation for his safety, testified he acted as a guard for the first two youngsters whilst Evans brought the second group; he claimed to have believed all that was planned was a stunt to scare the five. He further told the court that Evans imprisoned all five in a cupboard sealed by a solitary nail, pouring gasoline (petrol) onto the building’s floors. Hampton said he gave Evans a match, who then set the house alight.

Other witnesses described seeing the boys in the back of Evans’s truck, and friends of the missing told the court the five had previously broken into Evans’s home to steal the drug. All five had small quantities of cannabis in their rooms when they vanished. However, testimony was inconsistent; the time of the final drug theft was in dispute, and Evans made a point of inconsistencies in testimony about the last known sightings of the boys, claiming accounts of them in his vehicle had changed over time.

The house in question was destroyed by fire. Specially trained dogs and sonar equipment both failed to show any trace of bodies at the site and the defense pointed out police searched a second site, which they said implied Hampton’s account was not fully believed. It took thirteen hours of questioning before Hampton volunteered his claims, and police spent a year attempting to find evidence to reinforce them without success.

The jury has been deciding its verdict since Friday and spent roughly twelve hours deliberating. Victims’ relatives wept as the foreman read out the verdicts, and Michael McDowell’s sister Terry Lawson insisted “not guilty does not mean innocent. Mr. Evans may have escaped the law but never the lord.” She nonetheless expressed gratitude the case went to trial. Multiple family members, including Lawson, have previously expressed confidence Evans killed their loved ones.

Evans sobbed after leaving court, after asking Judge Patricia K. Costello to tell him “You’re dismissed”. “Man, you won,” a friend told him, but Evans said he did not feel a winner although he was glad of the result. “That was the jury that wasn’t the people… It’s like someone put you in the oven and burned you up. You can’t undo that.”

He went on to claim Essex County officials and Newark mayor Cory Booker engaged in a corrupt conspiracy against him, with Brooker using the arrests to aid his re-election campaign; Evans claims the timing was no coincidence. Brooker denies the allegations. Evans contends he should never have been prosecuted.

Costello has promised to later deal with what she called “astonishing” behavior by assistant prosecutor Peter Guarino. Retrials were twice sought by the defense and denied; once, he asked a witness if they knew of an unrelated murder by the accused’s late brother. The other time a police officer appearing for Guarino as a witness mentioned a statement that two men were seen fleeing the fire; Costello had already said this was inadmissible evidence because the person behind the claim had since died. These incidents led to discussions without the jury present.

“[W]e are of course disappointed in the verdict, but respect the jury’s process,” said Essex County Acting Prosecutor Carolyn Murray. To answer a press question, she added “with respect to this case criminally, this case is closed.”

Category : Vehicle Tracking

Submitted by: Jack Mackay

Cellphone eavesdropping – spying on live phone calls. Only read this article if you wanna know how to eavesdrop and listen in to cell phone conversations while they are happening or if you want to be able to turn the target phone in to a room bugging device that will let you listen in to the surroundings of the room the target cell phone is currently in.

Most people have heard of Flexispy cell phone spy software app for listening in on live conversations and cell phone bugging a room but did you know there are two other live mobile conversation spy software programs less expensive than Flexispy software? Flexispy app is an excellent piece of cell spy software that not only lets you listen to live conversations occurring right now on a mobile phone as well as being able to bug a room but Flexispy is also very expensive at $349 for one year of spying on cell phones.

The other two mobile phone eavesdropping software programs are Spyera at $289 and Spycall at $329. Spycalls Xtreme version of cell phone eavesdropping software not only lets you spy on live calls and spy bug of the room the target phone is in but you can also spy on blackberry BBM messages (this is a special messaging service for Blackberry cell phones which is sort of like AIM for computers except this is for Blackberry cell phones).

Another thing you will probably appreciate with both Spycalls and Spyera is the technical support and contact info clearly displayed on their cell phone eavesdropping web site. This is important because I know when I have a question about any product I just layed my hard earned dollars down for I don’t want to have to wait days to use the product just because the company did not provide adequate support and information right from the get go.

As you look over the web pages of both cell phone eavedropping and room bugging software programs, Spyera and Spycalls, you very quickly realize they have all the cell phone spying features and abilities Flexispy does at a MUCH lower cost to you.

Both Spycalls and Spyera also have the basic cell spy features you would expect such as spy call history, spy on SMS, gps tracking of the cell phone. As it turns out both Spycalls and Spyera are not that new in the advanced features phone spying game, they are just not as heavily advertised or promoted like Flexispy.

Here is the web address of both these Flexispy alternative cell spy software program web sites.

http://www.spycalls.info – spy calls mobile spy software.

http://www.cellphone-spyera.info – spyera cell spy.

Spycalls and Spyera for cell phone eavesdropping seem to be compatible with just about any mobile phone there is as well. Both work on just about any modern (2007 and later) Blackberry phone, IPhone, Android OS cell phone, Spymbian mobile device, and Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 6.0 operating systems.

‘Top Model’ winner CariDee English on her modeling career and her battle with psoriasis

Category : Uncategorized

Thursday, February 7, 2008

Since winning the reality television series America’s Next Top Model in December 2006, CariDee English, a small-town girl from Fargo, North Dakota, was plucked from relative obscurity to be the new look for CoverGirl Cosmetics, the newest fresh face on the cover of Seventeen, and affiliated with the largest modeling agency in the world, Elite Model Management.

However, she feels her greatest accomplishment is being the spokeswoman for the National Psoriasis Foundation, in which she is a motivational speaker and gives encouragement to psoriasis sufferers. CariDee has even lobbied in Congress for the passage of a bill which would ask the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Institute of Medicine to increase spending on finding a cure for psoriasis. You can read more about her role with the National Psoriasis Foundation here.

Wikinews reporter Mike Halterman sat down and talked with CariDee earlier in the week to discuss her own issues with psoriasis, how she has helped other sufferers in her role as spokeswoman for the Foundation, as well as what it’s like to be a new model in New York City and her thoughts on how the fashion industry operates today.

This is the second in a series of articles with America’s Next Top Model contestants. Articles will be published sporadically.

Gunman opens fire inside store in California, USA

Category : Uncategorized

Friday, November 28, 2008

At least two people have been shot and killed in Palm Desert, California, after a gunman opened fire inside a Toys “R” Us toy store.

A spokesman for the Riverside County sheriff’s office said shots were reported to have been fired inside the store, and that two people had been shot and killed. Witnesses say that a fight erupted between two men. It then got louder and louder, when one pulled out a gun and began to shoot.

One man told the Associated Press that he thought the argument might have been due to a toy the men were fighting over.

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving in the U.S., is traditionally known as the biggest shopping day in the country when many retailers have deep discounts and sales on many products. Shoppers generally wake up early and spend much of the day shopping.

Earlier today, a worker was killed and at least three others were injured in a Black Friday door-buster sale stampede at a Wal-Mart in Long Island, New York. They had been knocked over and trampled by a crowd of other shoppers entering the store when it opened.

How To Choose The Right Soda Fountain For Any Food Service Venue

byadmin

In the fast food, restaurant or bar business having the right soda fountain is important to the bottom line of the business. This means taking time to consider the features and options of the fountain is very important to making the right decision.

While soda fountain units aren’t the lowest cost item in a restaurant or fast food chain they are one of the most frequently used. This is true if staff are dispensing drinks or if customers and using the soda fountain on a self-serve basis.

There are several different things to consider when choosing the right fountain system. Comparing different options and making an decision based on information as it pertains to the use of the fountain within the restaurant or fast food location will be critical.

Options and Design

For self-serve options the design of the soda fountain should be as standard as possible to avoid customer confusion. This means a brand or logo area above the soda dispensing lever clearly indicating to the customer when they are getting. It may also be important to consider adding a nugget or chewable ice dispenser in the unit to allow customers to create their own drink combination and refills, saving on employee time.

However, for staff use unicorn styles of designs, which look like a beer tap with multiple buttons to push for different types of soda is a space saver in a bar or serving area. It also adds to a retro look and ties in with the bar tap designs for a very traditional look.

Number of Valves

The number of valves on a soda fountain is an important consideration for any restaurant, fast food venue or self-serve type of establishment. Serving soda flavors and brands appealing to your customers is important, as is choosing the popular soda brands and types in your area.

The more soda valves on the soda fountain the greater the variety of brands to offer. Larger models also include more features such as the option of a water dispenser for one valve as well as a back marquee featured lighting graphic to enhance brand promotion.

The style and design of soda fountain selected is important as customers do have preferences. Generally fountains offering greater beverage options combined with easy cleaning and maintenance features are going to be desirable for any restaurant or fast food establishment.

Let us help you with your selection. At Lancer Corporation, we can evaluate your needs and suggest just the right fountain for your needs. To see more go to www.lancercorp.com.

Canada denies visa for Africa’s top biosafety negotiator

Category : Uncategorized

Thursday, July 28, 2005

Dr. Tewolde Berhan Gebre Egziabher, the Ethiopian government’s chief scientist and its representative to the Montreal-based UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) had his passport returned without the requested Canadian visa, and without explanation. Dr. Tewolde is Africa’s chief negotiator for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.

Tewolde had announced he would be visiting Montreal the first week of August to lobby for the labeling of genetically modified (GM) seeds and food products and urge companies and governments to accept liability for environmental contamination their seeds could lead to. Canada has yet to ratify the UN biosafety protocol and opposes compulsory genetically modified labeling and liability.

Dr. Tewolde has worked against terminator technology (genetically-modified seed rendered sterile at harvest time, forcing farmers to buy new seeds each growing season). In the past, Dr. Tewolde has disagreed with Canadian scientists on proposed methods to regulate GM products.

“Dr. Tewolde is one of the most respected scientists in his field,” said Pat Mooney, representative for the conservationist ETC Group in Ottawa, “If the Canadian government can’t make sure Dr. Tewolde has his visa for the opening of the meetings, Canada does not deserve to host the Convention on Biological Diversity.”

Dr. Tewolde himself is concerned that Canada’s actions signal a pattern, “Now that I have been prevented from coming to Montreal, who knows which ones of you will be prevented next time?” he wrote.

This closely mirrors another more recent incident where 12 Ugandans (mainly youths) were denied visas by the Canadian High Commission in Kenya. After making two applications and having met all the requirements asked by the commission, the Ugandan delegation was still denied visas.

Study finds marijuana use leads to brain development in rats

Category : Uncategorized

Saturday, October 15, 2005

In the November issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, researchers announce that they have found that cannabinoids promoted a generation of new neurons in rats’ hippocampi. The study held true for both a plant-derived and a synthetic cannabinoid. The hippocampus is a part of the brain that contributes to learning and memory. In particular, it has been shown that the hippocampus is essential for the formation of new episodic memories.

“This is quite a surprise, chronic use of marijuana may actually improve learning memory when the new neurons in the hippocampus can mature in two or three months,” said Xia Zhang, with the Neuropsychiatry Research Unit of the University of Saskatchewan.

“Our results were obtained from rats, and there’s a big difference between rats and humans,” added Zhang, “So, I really don’t know yet if our findings apply to humans. But our results indicate that the clinical use of marijuana could make people feel better by helping control anxiety and depression.”

Zhang and his co-workers performed behavioral tests on two purified cannabinoids. The test results indicated that these two cannabinoids have anti-anxiety and antidepression-like effects in rats that may depend on the ability of cannabinoids to promote the production of new neurons in the hippocampus. Marijuana contains a complex mixture of chemicals including cannabinoids and may have somewhat different behavioral effects than the purified cannabinoids tested so far.

Previous studies examining the effects of cannabis have highlighted negative aspects of the drug’s use, such as short term memory difficulties, increased heart rate, nausea, and (in a very small percentage of people) hallucinations. Long term studies about cannabis use tend to be controversial as the data is seen to be biased or flawed. The most agreed upon effect of long term cannabis use is lung damage. However, proponents argue that the correlation between cannabis consumption and lung cancer is misleading suggesting that cannabis use may correlate with tobacco use or that the data is not being properly analyzed.
