High Expectations for 2012 Clayton State Soccer Teams

There are high expectations this fall at Clayton State University for both the men’s and women’s 2012 soccer teams. Each have a good shot at making the conference playoffs. The men have been picked in the Preseason Peach Belt Conference Coaches Poll to finish second. The Lakers are poised to challenge Flagler College, the defending conference champions, for the top spot. CSU players Arturo Cruz and Kevin Rodriguez were named to the preseason All- Conference team. CSU women have been picked to finish fourth in the conference, one of the top NCAA Division II women’s conferences in the country. The women have four returning All-Peach Belt Conference players from last year, including their top two scorers.
In their season opener, the CSU men will host Pfeiffer University in The Loch Shop Classic at Laker Field on August 31. They will host Queens College on September 1. The next week the men will travel to Tampa to play in the Peach Belt/Sunshine Challenge. Their September 6 opponent will be Eckerd College, and they will play University of Tampa on September 8. The CSU men will return home to play Newberry on September 11 and conference rival Flagler on September 15. The Lakers will finish September with games at UNC Pembroke on the 22nd, at home against Montevallo on the 26th, and at Limestone College on the 29th. The men will begin October with home matches against Tusculum on October 3 and Lander on October 6. They will face conference rivals North Georgia, Francis Marion, and Georgia Southwestern in away games. CSU will finish their season at home hosting USC Aiken on October 20 and Young Harris on October 24. The CSU women begin their season on Labor Day weekend at Queens Women’s Soccer Tournament in Charlotte. They will matchup against Pfeiffer on August 31 and Queens on September 2. The women are at home against Tennessee Wesleyan on September 4 and Florida Tech on September 9. The Laker women travel to Coker College in South Carolina on September 11. Their first conference game will be at home against Flagler College on September 15. CSU will play West Georgia at home on September 19, and then travel to UNC Pembroke with the men on September 22. The women host Montevallo at home on September 26 and then travel to Georgia College on September 29. The October schedule has CSU facing Armstrong on the 3rd and Lander on the 6th at home. During mid-October the women are away at North Georgia, Columbus State, and Georgia Southwestern. The Laker women will finish their season at home against USC Aiken on October 20, Georgia Gwinnett on the 21st, and Young Harris on October 24. Clayton State University is located 15 miles south of downtown Atlanta in Morrow, Georgia. CSU has an enrollment of 6,900 students. Men’s soccer is coached by Pete Petersen and women’s soccer is coached by Gareth O’Sullivan.
