How the Army Corps of Engineers closed one New Orleans breach

Category : Uncategorized

Friday, September 9, 2005

New Orleans, Louisiana —After Category 4 storm Hurricane Katrina slammed into New Orleans, on the night before August 29, 2005, several flood control constructions failed. Much of the city flooded through the openings. One of these was the flood wall forming one side of the 17th Street Canal, near Lake Pontchartrain. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is the primary agency for engineering support during such emergencies. A USACE team was assessing the situation in New Orleans on the 29th, water flow was stopped September 2nd, and the breach was closed on September 5th.

Devon prison rooftop protest ends peacefully

Category : Uncategorized

Monday, July 3, 2006

A rooftop protest at a Devon (UK) jail has ended peacefully after almost 28 hours.

The protest, involving 10 inmates, at HMP Channings Wood started after prisoners complained their meals were being prepared by sex offenders.

The category C training prison in Newton Abbot, Devon presently holds 663 inmates, with units dedicated to sex offenders and drug offenders.

A Home Office spokesman said: “The rooftop protest at HMP Channings Wood has ended peacefully with no injuries to prisoners or prison staff.”

The Prison Service has so far refused to confirm the extent of the damage done during the protest, but it is believed to run into thousands of pounds with glass being smashed and paving slabs being torn up.

Earlier on Monday afternoon three prisoners had already given up their protest, leaving ten remaining on the roof. They eventually came down at around 6:30 p.m. BST after speaking with trained negotiators.

The Prison Service has launched an internal enquiry into the protest.

The Fisherman Sweater

Category : Farming

Fisherman Sweater HistoryRooted in our common heritage, commercial fishermen, weekend sailors, farmers and in fact people from all walks of life love the fisherman sweater. At sea, and in town, it is a symbol of simpler times when you could look good in something that was designed just to be practical and keep you warm, not to show off a label in order to be some kind of status symbol like many garments manufactured today.

The fisherman sweater has its origins in Brittany. Surprisingly it was not the fishermen that started to wear them, but merchants who during the 18th century travelled to England to sell onions, these merchants wore an item of knitted wool clothing that made them recognizable from a distance, the garments were made with very tight stitching, using a stitch designed for warmth, water proofing, and considerable resistance to the wind.

The fisherman sweater first worn by fishermen was a long garment, tightly fitted, designed to protect a sailors back and keep the body warm. Highly practical, it had buttons on the side to aid quick wearing and removal, and was made from unwashed sheep wool, which still contained the sheeps natural oil, which had protected the sheep from the elements; this oil is removed from modern wool, as it can smell a bit. The fishermans sweaters were made in many colours like red, white, blue, and fancy patterns were eventually woven into the sweaters to depict ropes and ladders etc.

The future of the Fisherman Sweater It has been a long journey for the fisherman sweater and it has survived many changes in fashion. In these times of high-tech clothing made in some cases from materials that were first invented for astronauts, it is nice to know that a garment made from good old fashioned wool which has been knitted in a design which has not changed much in hundreds of years ago is still as popular as ever and probably will still be for some time yet.

On Monday, Filipina weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in women’s weightlifting in the 55 kg category during her fourth Olympic games. She lifted a combined weight 224 kg (494 lb), tying the previous new Olympic record. In the snatch she lifted 97 kg (214 lb) and in the clean and jerk 127 kg (280 lb), totaling the 224 kg.

After the match, she said in an interview, “I am 30 years old and I thought it would be like going down, my performance, but I was shocked I was able to do it”. A statement from the Philippines’ presidential spokesman Harry Roque celebrated Diaz’s win, saying, “Congratulations, Hidilyn. The entire Filipino nation is proud of you”.

Ukrainian manufacturer preparing to sell Adolf Hitler dolls

Category : Uncategorized

Thursday, April 24, 2008

Correction — May 3, 2008 This article has been retracted. This article has been deemed a hoax. Please see the follow up article, Hitler doll story found to be hoaxed, for more information.

News reports are claiming that dolls depicting former Nazi leader Adolf Hitler will go on sale in Ukraine. These reports cite Ukraine’s Zerkalo Nedeli newspaper which reported that a toy manufacturer would release the line of Hitler dolls in the summer.

The 40cm doll will reportedly first be available in Kiev with a £100 (GBP) price tag and comes with a large range of accessories in a presentation box with the dates of Hitler’s birth and death.

Nazis images are illegal in Ukraine, with positive portrayal specifically banned. However, there are allegations that right-wing nationalist politics are gaining strength in the country and that xenophobia and racism are on the rise, including some said to be comparable to that present in Germany under Nazi rule. Fascism and propaganda are also banned.

When the former Soviet Union, including Ukraine, was invaded by Germany under Hitler’s rule 2–3 million Ukrainians were among the casualties, of which 1.5 million were Jews.

Adolf can be dressed in various guises, including “early days Adolf”, which consists of a brown shirt and jodhpurs, and “Wartime Adolf”, which features a grey tunic, black trousers and the Iron Cross medal. The doll also comes with boots and shoes, caps, gloves, full uniforms, cane and belt which can be placed on Hitler, whose arms move, allowing the doll to replicate the famed salute of its real life counterpart.

Kids can undress fuhrer, pin on medals and there’s a spare head in the kit to give him a kinder expression on his face

Also included is a model of Blondi, Hitler’s female German Shepherd, who was exceedingly loyal to Hitler. Hitler poisoned Blondi with cyanide in 1945 at the same time as taking his own life in his bunker at Berlin.

“It is like Barbie. Kids can undress fuhrer, pin on medals and there’s a spare head in the kit to give him a kinder expression on his face. He has glasses that are round, in the manner of pacifist John Lennon,” said one saleswoman. The company, which will release the dolls in Summer, says that if demand is high a range of toys themed on the Third Reich may be released, to include barracks, working models of crematoriums and gas chambers, concentration camps and interior models of the chancellery.

The doll is not set to be released until the summer, but BBC News Online has footage suggesting that some stores are selling the doll already.

Google removes German BMW from search results

Category : Uncategorized

Monday, February 6, 2006

The search engine Google announced the removal of the official German BMW web site from its search results today. Google is reported to have removed the website due to the use of a trick to raise its website ratings in the search engine’s results.

The online version of Forbes magazine reported that the German word for used car, Gebrauchtwagen, appeared 42 times in a doorway web page created by the German car manufacturer. Doorway web pages contain many keywords designed to attract search robots. The page presented to Google’s robot for indexing was significantly different from the page presented to the site’s visitors.

According to a recent blog post by Matt Cutts, one of Google’s software engineers, this technique is “a violation of our webmaster quality guidelines.” These guidelines encourage webmasters to “avoid tricks intended to improve search engine rankings.”

BMW reacted to the measure by claiming that it had no intention of manipulating the search results, but instead used the doorway pages with the objective of “offering a better service” to those looking for used cars.

Plasma Cutters Can Cut Though Anything!

By Cooper Miller

One of the best tools for cutting metal is a plasma cutter. It is effective and convenient to use, and thanks to the latest technology being applied in the area, it is now possible to cut metal with almost laser precision.

A plasma cutter works differently than a conventional welding torch. Rather than using a flame produced from a burning gas in the style of oxy acetylene welding, a plasma cutter uses a jet of inert gas such as compressed air, and then applies a very high voltage charge. The electric charge arcs through the jet of air, and ionizes the gas. The ionized gas reaches extremely high temperature, and becomes what is called plasma.

This highly charged and hot temperature jet of plasma is able to melt through metal at the point of contact without having a massive impact on the surrounding material. This makes a plasma cutter a very precise way of cutting metal.

For small jobs in a workshop where metal is being cut in order to make a bodywork patch, or a replacement panel, plasma cutters are the ideal solution. One of the most important aspects of plasma cutters is that they use an inert gas, meaning that you do not have to worry about storing volatile and explosive gases.

In the past, plasma cutters were a fairly imprecise and blunt means of cutting metal thanks to their large ‘flame’, however, thanks to advances in the materials and technology used to manufacture plasma cutters, they are now able to produce a much more focused flame. This means that you not only get a more exact and neater cut, but are able to do it with lower power.

Plasma cutters are available from under $1000. You can get a Firepower 12 amp plasma cutter with its own compressor that uses compressed air to create the plasma torch for $998.75. This tool, which is ideal for small jobs in any work shop, is flexible enough to carry out a range of tasks.

With a basic compressor driven plasma cutter, you get a torch with two settings. The pilot arc of plasma is ideal for burning off paint, while when you turn up the power; the cutter is able to cut through sheets of steel an eighth of an inch thick at a rate of around nine inches per minute.

By spending a little more, it is possible to get a more powerful and flexible tool. For less than $1350, you can buy a Lincoln Electric Welders Century 25 Amp Plasma Cutter. This tool is designed for effective auto body repair jobs, and provides a fully earthed cutting arc that removes the high frequency harmonics that are able to damage the complex electronics in a car.

The century 25 amp plasma cutter has its own built in compressor, which has an adjustable regulator to control the size of the actual plasma. This means that you can vary the intensity of the cutting edge of the tool, and deal with metals of different thicknesses up to 3/16′ of milled steel, at an acceptable cutting rate.

At the top end of the plasma cutter market there are complex and powerful tools such as the Miller Auto Arc 4500 Plasma Cutter. This tool, which retails from around $2500, is a much more flexible and powerful cutter than most other models. Its 27 amp power supply, coupled with a strong compressor means that it can deliver a flame hot enough to cut through steel more than half an inch thick at an acceptable rate, and get through most body panel metal like a hot knife through butter.

As with all tools, it is important to select the one that fits in best with your business needs and budget. If you only require a lightweight plasma cutter for occasional jobs in the workshop, then an entry level model is perfectly acceptable, however, if you need to perform regular work requiring the tool, then getting a more robust model is an excellent idea, as the tool will more than pay for itself over time thanks to its reliability and ability to cut through metal much faster and let you get on with work more quickly.

Wikinews interviews U.S. Constitution Party presidential candidate Max Riekse

Category : Uncategorized

Saturday, March 1, 2008

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with Max Riekse, one of the candidates for the Constitution Party nomination for the 2008 United States presidential election.

Riekse is a retired decorated United States Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army who served in both the Vietnam War and the Iraq War. He is also a former public school teacher and Assistant Professor of Military Science at Western Michigan University. He has a B.A. in Political Science and International Relations from the University of South Florida as well as two M.A.s, one in Political Science and International Relations, the other in Eductaion and History. Both are from Western Michigan University.

We asked him if he thinks he has a good shot at winning the Constitution Party nomination and ultimately the presidency. He replied, “I will give it my best shot because I think I can do better then all previous Constitution Party presidential candidates….As to being in the White House in 2009, realistically, its a long shot; but so was Abe Lincoln in the new Republican Party.”

When asked about America’s public school system he said, “Local school boards and the people they are responsible to are the best judge of what is needed; this with state oversight, will help boost public school quality & education.”

Riekse is running for president because he has been “very tired of our Republican and Democratic choices for president for many years. With a population of some 300 million people to draw from, I would think we could do much, much better then we have been doing in regards to having a choice for president.”
