British actress Kara Tointon and her Russian dance partner Artem Chigvintsev have become the winners of the latest series of the BBC Television programme Strictly Come Dancing. The pair won the dancing show on Saturday, leaving British television presenter Matt Baker and his Kazakhstani dance partner Aliona Vilani in second place.

It’s just the most special thing that I’ve ever achieved.

Bookmakers had considered this dancing duo to be the most likely to win the series. Meanwhile, Australian actress Pamela Stephenson finished in third place along with her British dance partner, James Jordan. It was ultimately a public vote that determined the results.

Upon winning, Tointon proclaimed: “It’s just the most special thing that I’ve ever achieved.” In reference to Chigvintsev, she exclaimed: “I want to thank this man, he’s been absolutely wonderful.” Talking about the experience, she commented: “I’ve met the most fantastic friends in my life and this has been the most special experience for me.” Chigvintsev then declared to Tointon: “You’re amazing.” Baker described the dancing pair as “worthy winners, without any doubt”, saying: “If I was at home I’d be voting for you, too.”

Earlier in the final programme, Tointon and Chigvintsev had danced to the tune of Cry Me a River; the dance received the acclaim of the judges. “I would kill to be able to dance like that, I thought it was amazing,” Craig Revel Horwood exclaimed. Alesha Dixon commented: “I’m quite sad that that is the last dance we are going to see you do”. In reference to the pair, she added: “Together you are first class.” Bruno Tonioli remarked: “You danced to a level that we hardly ever see here. Whatever happens, this was incredible.”

Bruno Tonioli described Matt Baker as “very dashing and elegant”. Len Goodman believed that he was “an excellent ballroom dancer”. At one point, Palema Stephenson received a perfect score of 40 from the four judges for her Viennese Waltz. Tonioli branded the dance as “simply brilliant”. Revel Horwood used the word “remarkable” to describe that performance.

Conference discusses the credibility of blogs

Category : Uncategorized

Friday, January 21, 2005

Seeking to “bring together a select group of thoughtful bloggers and journalists”, at Harvard today opened a two-day, by-invitation only, Blogging, Journalism and Credibility: Battleground and Common Ground conference.

Held at the Kennedy School of Government, the conference was an initiative of the American Library Association’s, Berkman Center for Internet and Society and the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy.

“One of the problems [with blogs],” said Dan Gillmor of Grassroots Media Inc., “is that any random website can look as good as any other website. We’re going to be working this through for a long time. We’re going to have to tell people, be skeptical.”

Addressing the question of credibility, both in mainstream media and in the new media self-publishing “blogosphere”, is one of the goals of the conference. The rapid transformation of the blogging media, its acceptance and repudiation as a form of journalism, is also a topic slated for discussion.

Corporate media has flirted with, disputed, and been directly affected by, bloggers. Future possible interactions between the new, blogging media, and mainstream media, provide topics for discussion.

Attendees and speakers included both established and new media names, academics and professionals, and amateurs. Topics covered ranged from jargon and terminology, through business models, and on to more esoteric subjects like “podcasting” and “vlogging”.

UPDATE: The conference wound up with a session covering issues identified during the conference and an open session of free-ranging discussion.

Medium Term Note Trading And Their Importance In A Worldwide Recession

Medium Term Note Trading And Their Importance In A Worldwide Recession

by

marcelford

Private Trading of Medium Term Notes, also known as Mid-Term Notes and MTNs, is essentially capital raised for the purposes of the development of working capital and the upward trend towards strengthening a company’s balance sheet. More times than naught, private trade programs encompass the development of new products, technologies and overall expansion. Whereas in this article, In the broad sense and in the most known categorization, we will be discussing Medium Term Note Private Trading which is a completely different investment channel generating tremendous returns for small and large, individual and corporate investors alike.

Investors have limited access when it comes to educating themselves and investing in the high-yield arena of MTN Trading. Unless they have liquidity in the hundreds of millions, most others who have less liquidity for investment find themselves on the outside trying to get a peek in. In this article, the general development of knowledge with regard to private trading, MTNs, BGs and other instrument facets, will explain why and where individuals willing to invest from $10M on up can participate in the world of Medium Term Note Trading. Why is there such a demand for investing in Private Programs that utilize MTNs and on occasion Treasury Bills? Since the mid-1990’s to the present day, Medium term Note originations total investment dollars have escalated from a estimated, yet traceable, phase of just over $10 billion dollars in mid-1990s to a current level of well over $75 billion dollars through the third quarter of 2008. There have been roughly 6,500 private trade programs done through the third quarter of 2008. Companies in the likes of Sony Capital, Harley Davidson, LG and other well recognized entities have all offered Mid-Term Notes collateralized by their assets for expansion and development. From a low of fewer than 2,500 in all of 1996, you can see that the interest towards Private Trading gains when markets and the economy as a whole degrades catapulting the need for short term, well secured notes backed by established corporations, banks, asset holders and countries. Hedge Funds, Portfolio Managers and Private Investors are often attracted to these Private Programs and understand the rules and guidelines that follow. Less experienced, smaller investors tend to be dismissed due to the anxiety levels and continuous pestering of updates. High-net worth, seasoned investors have their blocked funds almost always are combined with other clients to build a larger trade bases, if individually large enough, say one billion and up, enter into a Private Trade Program by themselves; however they too may very well be bundled with other client assets to reduce the number of trades being managed. Their blocked funds represent these MTN Trade Programs and are a tremendous economic incentive in their own right by the generation of liquidity by the function of process. The derived profits most often than not, as well as the leveraged amount of the blocked funds, will go into further capitalization of new companies believed to have significant growth possibilities in industries such as: healthcare, bio-technologies, software/hardware and telecommunications. These Private Trade Programs add value to these companies and further compel advancements in those particular sectors. Without Medium Term Notes, the potential of utilizing them in Private Trading and the profits derived from such, many of the participants of these programs would never launch over the first tier with regards to the programs they are included in. Typical Minimum Investment Requirement: Mid-Term Note Trading and investing is not easily accessible to the typical high-net worth investor or well capitalized corporation unless they first know these types of programs exist and then are either introduced to the trading platform from a referring client or through a series of referral educational sites where the client can thereafter request admission. Most Trade Programs typically will accept investors who are willing to commit as little as $25 million to have blocked for the purposes of leverage. Although some Trade Managers have dropped their minimums to only $250K with coupled by a series of A,B,C programs to ramp up the clients capital to higher level trades. Fund of Funds: A fund of funds holds the leveraged funds of many private partnerships that invest in private trades. It provides a way for firms and individual participants to increase cost effectiveness and thereby reduce their minimum investment requirement. Since a fund of funds is leveraging against those original funds, sometimes up to 20 to 50 times, the accumulated return for that specific funds of funds becomes much more lucrative. In addition, because of its size and diversification, a fund of funds has the potential to offer greater returns than you might experience with an individual MTN Trade Program. This only holds true to those Programs that are under the $100 million dollar level though since most times the lesser amounts are leveraged through funds of funds or equivalent means. The main disadvantage, if it could be considered such, is that there is an additional layer of fees paid to the fund of funds manager. Though typically $100 million and up will roll out the welcome mat, investors can on occasion, participate with $250,000 – $10 million to the respective fund of funds manager. For those smaller amounts under $10 million, the platform manager may not let you participate unless you are an accredited investor with a net worth between $1.5 million to $5 million. Is it worth the time and consideration? There are several key risks in any type of investing since you essentially, with any investment, can guarantee a return (except for low yielding T-Bills, etc.) Private Trading is no exception. As mentioned earlier, the fees of Private Trade Programs that cater to smaller investors can be higher than you would normally expect with conventional investments, such as mutual funds. With a pre-established historical return rate on these smaller (less than $100M) funds may be in the double to triple digits as reflected in previous scenarios. The promulgation of these fees are irrespective and of little consequence to the investor although many investors feel that they deserve more, do essentially doing very little. In a market as volatile as the one we currently face, it is much harder to find streamlined programs that offer little risk. Transferring of investors’ funds is not evidenced in these Private Trade Programs that are at or above $10 million dollars. A block is placed on the client’s funds within their account for the duration of the trading period. Hence, the safety the client experiences remains secure with the leveraged program they enter into.

With so many misconceptions of Private Trade Programs, once one understands how and why these Programs work and their importance in

a failing economy, the fog starts to lift. Learn more at www.InvestorEarth.com.

A leak at the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing facility on Cumbrian coast, England

Category : Uncategorized

Monday, May 9, 2005

At the Sellafield reprocessing plant, a leak in the process was spotted on April 19. The leak did not cause danger to people or the environment but it disturbed the normal operation of the plant.

Workers at the plant noticed a discrepancy in the amount of material being reprocessed that enters pipes that lead to a set of centrifuges and the amount of material actually arriving at the centrifuges. They used remote cameras to find the crack where the material was escaping; over twenty tonnes have leaked into a steel lined chamber.

The material, consisting of mostly uranium and some plutonium dissolved in nitric acid, would have been reprocessed in the centrifuges. The large stainless steel chamber that now contains the spilled material is too dangerous to enter due to radioactivity, though it poses no danger to those inside or outside the plant.

The plant has been shut down pending repairs.

Hiring Your Preferred Professional Auto Accident Lawyer In Macon

Category : Copywriting

byAlma Abell

Professional Auto Accident Lawyer in Macon comprehends methods needed to ensure that your case is substantial and effectively presented in court. Your selected attorney will talk to witnesses at the scene of the accident and review the accident report. This will determine who is at fault and exactly how the accident occurred. This information is vital to your case, and your preferred attorney will document this information accurately within your case file.

Accuracy of Documentation

Before presenting your case in court, your preferred attorney will verify all the facts in your case. Through verifications, there are not any surprises when you arrive in court. Your attorney will have all the facts with witnesses and documentation to back up your claim. He or she will ensure that all witnesses are included in documentation related to your claim.

Your Court Date

During your court appearance, each side will present evidence to the judge. Typically, an automobile insurance company will provide the individual who is at fault with an attorney. This attorney is there to prove your case invalid in order to prevent the insurance company from paying you a settlement. This is why it is so critical for your attorney to ensure the accuracy of all documentation. With evidentiary support, it is highly improbable that opposition can prove that the other driver was not at fault.

Your medical records and an estimate for property damage will provide adequate evidentiary support to prove that you were injured in the accident. This will also establish the severity of your injuries and property damage. Your attorney will present this documentation to the judge along with the accident report completed by law enforcement.

Compensation

The awarded compensation is typically based on the cost of medical treatment and repair costs for your vehicle. Some judges may require additional compensation for pain and suffering depending on the severity of your injuries. If this is the case, it is more likely that you will recover a large settlement that is paid to you over an extended period of time.

Fake impotence drugs linked to low blood sugar outbreak

Category : Uncategorized

Thursday, February 12, 2009

An article in the February 12 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine reports on an unusual cause for an outbreak of low blood sugar among men in Singapore: illegal use of sexual performance enhancement drugs that were contaminated with a diabetes drug.

Between January and May 2008, 149 men and one woman between 19 and 97 (mean age 51) were admitted to five public hospitals for unexplained low blood sugar. Similar cases were reported in media reports from Hong Kong. Seven Singaporean patients remained in a coma because of prolonged sugar starvation of the brain, and four subsequently died. The diabetes drug glyburide was found in blood and/or urine samples in 85% of cases; 30% admitted having used illegal sexual performance enhancers.

The contaminated products were a counterfeit version of the drug Cialis (meant for the treatment of genuine erectile dysfunction), and three purported herbal preparation (the affected brands included Power 1 Walnut and Santi Bovine Penis Erecting Capsule). All four preparations additionally contained Viagra in varying concentrations. Two herbal products contained traces of the weight loss drug sibutramine, a compound related to amphetamines.

The drug packaging mentioned names of non-existent overseas production facilities, so the source of the contamination with the diabetes drug could not be established.

The authors underline the risks that is known to be associated with purchasing drugs from unreliable providers or from online resellers. The clandestine use of impotence drugs as sexual performance enhancers seems to have provided a good illustration of this problem. They further call for more efforts by national and international health and law enforcement agencies to curb the manufacturing, international transport and sales of untrustworthy medication.

US Congresswoman Jackie Speier comments about Obamacare, Paralympics

Category : Uncategorized

Saturday, November 9, 2013

With the 2014 Winter Paralympics set for March, Wikinews sought comment from U.S. Representative Jackie Speier, who serves California’s 14th congressional district about the event and how current U.S. policies impact people with disabilities. Elected to the U.S. House in 2008, she serves on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the House Armed Services Committee. For the first time ever, the Paralympics will be broadcast live in the U.S. on network television.

((Wikinews)) : Will “Obamacare” have a positive or negative impact on the lives of people with disabilities?

Jackie Speier: By-and-large the Affordable Care Act will have a significant and lasting beneficial impact on persons with disabilities […] Most importantly, pre-existing conditions will no longer prevent persons with disabilities from obtaining health insurance. Lifetime limits on medical expenses will be removed and preventive services will be free. All of these provisions of the law create health insurance that is highly supportive of good health outcomes for everyone, but in particular for those who have a disability.

((WN)) : Are there any Paralympic athletes or elite athletes with disabilities from your district that people should know more about?

Jackie Speier: There are currently two Paralympic athletes who train or live in my district that people will definitely hear more about in the coming years. One is a young woman named Allie Hyatt who trains in Judo with Willy Cahill, [whom] I have also trained with. Allie, who is visually impaired and just 15, has already won numerous awards and will participate in the Youth Olympic Games next year. She is sure to be a force in the Judo world for many, many years. Hyatt lives in San Francisco and Cahill is the founder and CEO of the Blind Judo Foundation.

Another great athlete is Mohamend Lahna who is training for the Rio Olympics in 2016 for the paratriathlon,” Speier continued. “He is from Morocco originally but lives now in San Mateo and trains daily at the College of San Mateo. He runs marathons with a prosthetic leg and has his sights set on winning several medals atworld and Olympic events in the future. Lahna has proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD), a birth defect that affects the hip and pelvis. He is married and has a 1-year-old child.

Wikinews also sought comment from other members of Congress, including John K. Delaney, Mike Honda, Kyrsten Sinema, Eric Swalwell, Raúl M. Grijalva and Ann Kirkpatrick but at publication time, had received no response.

Canada to legalise marijuana to ‘make it more difficult for kids to access’

Category : Uncategorized

Sunday, April 16, 2017

In order to put the cannabis drug (marijuana) out of reach of minors, the Canadian federal government announced a bill to legalise cannabis for the age group of eighteen and above, on Thursday. The bill would allow adults to possess cannabis publicly, previously a criminal offence.

Canada’s health minister Jane Philpott tweeted, “Today we tabled new legislation to legalise, strictly regulate, and restrict access to cannabis. Our goal: keep it out of the hands of youth, and profits out of the hands of criminals.” The Canadian government, via their official website, explained cannabis is available illegally, and their measures to stop it did not work. Criminal organisations are making money selling cannabis. Under-aged people can obtain the drug easily; they said, “it is easier for our kids to buy cannabis than cigarettes.”

The bill allows provinces and territories to set the age limit above eighteen. In order to prevent criminal gangs from making a profit, selling the drug needs a license permitting its sale. Adults can purchase the drug online from a licensed producer if a retail shop is not available in the province.

Adults can carry up to 30 g (slightly over an ounce) of cannabis and grow at most four cannabis plants at home, for personal use. The plants should be no taller than a metre, the bill proposed. Selling cannabis to minors would be a specific criminal offence.

The legislation requires parliamentary approval and royal assent. If passed, the bill would be under effect by July 2018, the government said. Health and safety experts and law enforcement were consulted before proposing the legislation. Except for medical purposes, possession of the drug remains illegal until the bill is passed. Regardless of the status of the bill, import and export of the drug would be illegal.

Previously when the government increased the taxes on cigarettes to discourage citizens from smoking, a black market for cigarettes developed.

Along with legalising cannabis, the bill would also permit the police officials to use tools like oral fluid drug screeners to detect if drivers are under the influence of the drug. Zero tolerance against drivers under influence of drugs is proposed. The government would also implement a public awareness campaign on the perils of driving under the influence of drugs.

The government still working on the restrictions. Lawmaker and former police chief Bill Blair said, “We do accept that more important work remains to be done.” If the bill is passed, Canada would be the second country to legalise cannabis completely. Uruguay is the first. Some countries, such as Germany, allow medical use of cannabis, but recreational use is prohibited.

Coordinated terrorist attack hits London

Category : Uncategorized

Thursday, July 7, 2005

Three bomb explosions have hit London Underground trains, and a further bomb destroyed a bus in the city centre. The Metropolitan Police Service has initially confirmed that 33 people have been killed in the four explosions on London‘s transport system this morning, and said the overall number of wounded was as high as 700, in what are believed to be terrorist attacks. (See later reports in the box at the side for later announcements made on following days.)

The first reports were of an explosion at 08:49 BST (UTC+1) on the Hammersmith & City Line between Liverpool Street station and Aldgate East. Explosions also occurred on a train between King’s Cross and Russell Square and another at Edgware Road. The explosions are currently being reported, and described by Prime Minister Tony Blair, as being “terrorist attacks.” Traces of explosives were found at two of the sites according to the BBC.

Scotland Yard has confirmed one explosion onboard a double decker red London bus travelling south outside the British Medical Association on Tavistock Square. Police cannot confirm whether this bomb was intended for another train and accidentally detonated aboard the bus instead.

Pundits are speculating the attack was co-ordinated by al-Qaeda. Dr. Shane Brighton, an intelligence expert at the Royal United Services Institute for Defence, claims that, “If what we are looking at is a simultaneous bombing — and it does look like that — it would very certainly fit the classic al Qaeda methodology.” Two militant Islamist groups are reported to have claimed responsibility for the blasts.

In a special news conference at 15:30 BST, July 7, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Brian Paddick of the Metropolitan Police confirmed 33 fatalities so far, 45 critical/serious injuries and approximately 300 minor injuries.

At 08:51 BST a bomb exploded on a Circle Line Underground train 91 metres/100 yards into the tunnel from Liverpool Street. Seven are known to be dead.

At 08:56 BST a bomb detonated on a Piccadilly Line train between King’s Cross and Russell Square. Twenty-one are dead; it is believed more bodies remain in the tunnel, which is one of the deepest on the Underground network.

At 09:17 BST a bomb exploded on another Circle Line train between Edgware Road Station and Paddington. The blast blew a hole in a wall, and another train was hit by debris from it. A third train is also involved. Five are known to be dead.

At 09:47 BST a No. 30 bus (Hackney – Marble Arch) blew up at the junction between Tavistock Square and Woburn Place outside the BMA building. It has been estimated that thirteen people died.

Earlier, quoting the Associated Press, Yahoo News had reported “at least 40 people were killed and more than 350 wounded”. Also, the same report says “two U.S. law enforcement officials said at least 40 people were killed”.

Several hotlines have been set up for those concerned about friends or relatives. A list of these numbers are below. The agencies setting up these hotlines stress that callers should try to reach their friends or relatives first before contacting the hotline. In addition, to prevent swamping, they also have asked that only genuine callers use the hotlines.

The first reports that came in were from London’s Liverpool Street station talking of an explosion on the Metropolitan Underground line and the station being evacuated. Later a BBC and a Wikinews reporter spoke of a bus being destroyed by a bomb blast in Tavistock Square outside the British Medical Association offices.

The initial reports of explosions were believed to have been the result of power surges. This was because the first indication of any disturbance was the opening of circuit breakers in the Underground, which was observed in the control room. This is usually due to a power surge, but in this case the actual cause was damage to the track circuits by bombs.

At approximately 10:50 BST reports were made that there was an additional, as yet unidentified explosion along Houndsditch, near Liverpool Street Station. Police were also warning pedestrians at Russell Square that a series of controlled explosions would be made shortly.

BBC News 24 has reported additional unspecified incidents at Brighton, Luton, and Swindon. These stations have been closed and there has been no official confirmation of the nature of the incidents, if any actually occurred.

The Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Ian Blair told London Live that there have been “events” at Edgware Road, Kings Cross, Liverpool Street, Russell Square, Aldgate East and Moorgate.

At 11:30 BST (UTC+1) St. Mary’s Hospital released a statement that they have admitted 4 critical, 8 severe and several minor injures. Injuries are limb damage, cuts, burns, head injuries and chest problems.

The exact causes of the explosions are still unknown. Initially, it was thought that it was some technical fault. However, the police later suspected terrorist attacks. Police are still unsure if the bombs were simply left in packages or whether there were some sort of suicide attacks.

According to the Associated Press, a senior Israeli official said Scotland Yard told Israel minutes before the explosions that it had received warnings of possible “terror attacks”. Sky News says this has been denied by Scotland Yard. Sir Ian during his interview with Sky stated that there had been no specific intelligence.

German news magazine Der Spiegel (as well as unconfirmed information from CIA) has reported that a letter from an organization calling itself “Secret organization – Al Qaeda in Europe” has appeared, claiming responsibility for the bombings. See our related story for more details.

A broadcast interruption on MTV Thursday at 16:00 UTC said a group naming itself “Al Jihad Network in Europe” claimed responsibility for the bombings.

A police spokeswoman has confirmed two deaths at Aldgate station. Television and radio reports are now saying there have been four separate incidents with up to 150 casualties, speculating that the blasts may be related to terrorist activity.

The Associated Press is reporting that a US law enforcement official has put the toll at 40 killed.

Emergency Services press conference at around 15:15 BST (UTC+1) confirms at least 33 fatalities, not including those resulting from the incident on the number 30 bus.

The CBC reports at least 52 fatalities, including 17 from the incident on the number 30 bus according to media reports.

It has been reported that in the early stages of the attack, information was only distributed to civilians within the center of London, and authorities had a specific policy of not providing information to the global media, in case any information provided to the media could be used by additional terrorists to target vulnerable locations during an evacuation procedure. This was probably partly to blame for the early confusion amongst the media.

Emergency services are also attending King’s Cross and Liverpool Street Station.

The entire tube network and all buses within zone 1 have been suspended and many buses are now being used to ferry the ‘walking wounded’ to the hospitals. The underground will be closed for an indefinite period of time, but according to Fox News Channel United States, the closure will last at least for all of today.

All emergency services are responding en-masse to a “major incident” and are responding only to life-threatening emergency calls. Patients are being turned away at hospitals to free room for those injured by the attacks.

The London Congestion Charge has been suspended for the 7th and 8th of July.

The Jerusalem Post reports that the Army was dispatched to seal off the Israeli Embassy as Israel’s Finance Minister is present for a conference. The army have reportedly been involved with rescues at Covent Garden. Police have denied this report (originally made on Sky News).

The police have cordoned off roads around Upper Woburn Place following a massive explosion on a bus in the vicinity. Traffic is at a standstill in many places in the capital. Defra‘s security branch are reporting that police are advising everyone in London not to use any public transport and the Cabinet Office are advising staff to remain in offices until further notice. A further email sent to all staff by Defra’s permanent secretary indicates that Charing Cross and Waterloo mainline railway stations have been closed down for police searches, and that other stations could close for similar reasons later today.

As at 09.30 BST, Kings Cross Thameslink was experiencing delays and overcrowding but no serious difficulties.

Businesses have been hit by the uncertainty of the events – the FTSE had fallen almost 3.5% by 11.47UTC ([1]), but started to recover a little by early afternoon. The value of the pound has dipped, and the London crude oil price has dropped. International markets are also suffering, with falls in share indexes felt as far as South Africa. See our related story for more details.

According to Fox News Channel United States, all London schools are in lockdown and students are being kept in schools.

The Authorities are asking people in London to stay where they are, indoors if possible. Take inside any bins or bags of rubbish they have left out for collection, providing they check their contents first. Arrangements are also being made for when schools finish as schools have been asked to keep pupils safe inside until the usual school closing time.

The UK Highways Agency has stated that at the request of the police, the message “Avoid London – Turn on Radio” is being displayed on electronic motorway message signs on the M25 and other major routes approaching London.

The US Homeland Security Department asked authorities in major cities for heightened vigilance of major transportation systems. Department spokesman Roehrkasse indicated that the department had not received any indications of plans that this type of attack is planned in the United States. Later, the department raised the terror alert level to orange. See our related story for more details.

A joint statement of the G8 leaders was made by Tony Blair at a press conference, also attended by US President George Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin. See our related story for more details.

The Queen and many other world leaders have also issued statements. See our related story for more details.
