Study: cognitive therapy as good as medication, but lasts longer

Category : Uncategorized

Wednesday, April 6, 2005A landmark study comparing effectiveness in reducing major depression of two forms of initial treatment — cognitive therapy which involves discussing thought processes with a qualified counselor, vs medication — has revealed that both forms of therapy reduce depression, but that the benefits of cognitive therapy last longer than those of medication. The study finding contradicts current treatment guidelines of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).

The 16-week study, by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and Vanderbilt University, was the largest trial yet undertaken to resolve the years-old debate. Two-hundred-and-forty patients with moderate-to-severe depression were given one or other of the treatments, or a purposely-ineffective placebo. Study representatives described the two treatments about equally effective — both much more effective than the placebo — but with the positive effect of talk-therapy lasting longer.

In fact, the cognitive therapy group saw only as many relapses as a another group that had continued to receive drug therapy.

“We believe that cognitive therapy might have more lasting effects because it equips patients with the tools they need to learn how to manage their problems and emotions,” said Robert DeRubeis, professor and chair of Penn’s Department of Psychology. “Pharmaceuticals, while effective, offer no long term cure for the symptoms of depression. For many people, cognitive therapy might prove to be the preferred form of treatment.”

“Medication is often an appropriate treatment, but drugs have drawbacks, such as side effects or a diminished efficacy over time,” DeRubeis said. “Patients with depression are often overwhelmed by other factors in their life that pills simply cannot solve. In many cases, cognitive therapy succeeds because it teaches the skills that help people cope.”

Researchers pointed out that while the effectiveness of cognitive therapy depended largely on the experience of the practitioner, the same was true of medication, due to the judgement required in prescribing correct dosages of drugs.

The APA declined to comment, on the basis that a quote appearing on Wikinews could be distorted by subsequent edits of the article.

Category : Irrigation

byAlma Abell

If you have water settling in your yard, it’s essential that you call an expert that specializes in Drainage in Brick, NJ. You and your family can’t enjoy your yard if it’s always wet and this is most often the result of a drainage problem. Below you’ll discover some common questions about your residential drainage system.

Q.) Can a wet yard cause damage to my home?

A.) If your yard is constantly wet and the water has nowhere to drain, it’s quite possible that the moisture will eventually get into your basement and damage your foundation. Wet soil underneath your home expands causing the foundation to raise higher than it should be. In very dry months, the soil shrinks back down and the foundation sinks back down into the soil. Foundation damage can be expensive to repair, so it’s best to have your drainage problem fixed before this happens. Mold and mildew growth thrive in a damp basement and this fungus can cause allergies to flare up and you may have breathing problems. If you have any belongings stored in your basement, the dampness can ruin them and cause them to have a musty odor.

Q.) How will a drainage system keep the water out of my yard?

A.) The professionals that will fix your Drainage in Brick, NJ will dig out a trench that runs away from your home. A perforated pipe is placed down in the trench and small rocks or gravel is poured around the pipe. Under normal circumstances, this type of drainage system works efficiently for at least ten years. Most of the time, a sump pump is also installed to work with the drainage system, especially if there isn’t a huge slope from the house to the drain field. A clean out is normally installed to inspect or snake the drain in the event of a clogged pipe.

Before your drainage problem gets any worse, call Jersey Shore Lawn Sprinkler, Inc for a free estimate to fix your drainage problem. This company also provides lawn care service, water well drilling, pump installation, lawn irrigation, swimming pool repair and back flow testing.

Canadian media company Bell Globemedia to acquire rival CHUM

Category : Uncategorized

Wednesday, July 12, 2006

Canadian media company CHUM Limited has announced that it has agreed to be acquired by larger rival Bell Globemedia Inc. for $1.7 billion CAD cash, bringing the CTV and Citytv broadcast-television networks and such specialty channels as MuchMusic, TSN and Bravo! under the same corporate umbrella.

Shareholders will receive $52.50 per common share of CHUM and $47.25 per Class B (non-voting) share. The estate of the late Allan Waters, who died late last year, has agreed to tender all its shares to the bid, netting the Waters family nearly $450 million.

In a joint statement, CHUM’s chairman, Jim Waters, said, “In Bell Globemedia’s offer, we not only found value for shareholders, but confidence that we would be placing CHUM in the hands of an owner with the financial resources and track record to continue to grow and build on our collective legacy.”

Globemedia CEO Ivan Fecan added, “We are able to make this premium offer because Bell Globemedia is clearly the most logical buyer of CHUM. There is a unique strategic fit to our operations that can make the united company a stronger national champion in broadcasting. We intend to maintain and build the valuable CHUM brands and develop more opportunities for Canadian programming.” He added that CTV and Citytv will remain separate networks and “will maintain separate and independent news divisions in order to ensure a continued diversity and competition in news coverage.”

In a separate release, CHUM announced it would be cutting 281 jobs at its stations across the country, particularly at its Citytv stations in western Canada. Effectively immediately, evening newscasts at CKVU-TV Vancouver, CKEM-TV Edmonton, CKAL-TV Calgary and CHMI-TV in the Winnipeg market are being eliminated, with plans for a new newsmagazine tentatively titled In Your City at the three Prairie stations, and more resources being put into each station’s local version of Breakfast Television. Less drastic changes are planned for its A-Channel stations in smaller markets. The company said these changes will result “in a significant reduction in staffing and operating costs.”

The companies said that they expect to sell CHUM’s A-Channel stations, as well as Alberta educational broadcaster Access, to third parties, despite CTV’s historical ties to several of them. Many of the A-Channel stations were originally acquired by CHUM from Baton Broadcasting, the predecessor of Bell Globemedia, in 1997, as part of a trade that sent CHUM’s ATV and ASN assets in Atlantic Canada to Baton and allowed Baton to acquire the CTV network itself.

Despite CHUM’s ownership of MuchMusic and CTV’s recent launch of MTV Canada, the companies claim their specialty channels are “complementary” and did not indicate any sale plans.

Bell Globemedia is currently majority-owned by BCE Inc. but is awaiting regulatory approval for a restructuring involving the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, Torstar Corp., and the Thomson family. In the interim, the takeover offer will be made by a new company owned by the proposed new shareholder structure.

Conducting An Open House When Selling Real Estate Can Be An Effective Tool

Category : Real Estate

By Stefan Hyross

Open houses, long considered the corner stone of real estate strategies, are not as glamourous since the advent of the internet and MLS listings. But is it still a worthwhile concept to focus the time and energy to host an open house.? When you consider that up to 48% of the internet queries include the term open house, it becomes clear that home shoppers are still attracted. Since research demonstrates that this traditional technique remains the most effective method to get a property, be sure and make the most of it.

Preparations need to start weeks before to mesh your on-line and printed flyers, since simply placing an Open House sign at the front of the house is not going to create the outcome you need. Because each area is slightly different, if you are a Burlington real estate agent you need to know what buyers are are seeking in your city. Look at the busy streets going to the house and decide how to position sandwich boards to guide the traffic to your site. The week of the open house, boost up the attention by handing out flyers to the neighboring houses in the area. Design your site in a way that there is a prominent notice on the home page that directs visitors to information and maps and include your website domain name on advertisements you place in the community newspaper. Take advantage of all your media outlets by creating fast and easy ways to direct the public to your existing open house listings.

To make the most of your day spent at the open house, grasp every opportunity to network. Meet the visitors at the doorstep and be welcoming and informative. Do not pre-judge buyers who walks in the door by their appearance or race, you never know what angle the shopper may have. Places like the Burlington Ontario real estate market are made up of a lot of different kinds of buyers which makes judging if a person can afford a property that much more difficult. They might actually be evaluating your methods to determine if they want to hire you as their agent. Rather than attacking them with typical sales questions listen carefully to what they tell you and respond with pointed questions that show you are listening to their requirements.

In a lot of the real estate courses that you have attended over your career you have probably been informed that if a home stands out to the potential purchaser it has a better potential to sell. After the visitors have visited the open house, you need to make sure you offer them some easy-to-carry material that will remind them of your property and your property since they may view numerous houses in one outing and you have to assure yours will stick in their minds. For instance, prepare a truly helpful handout that will answer some questions they may not have asked you concerning the area and the process of house hunting. In this handout you can also include pages about properties that are in the same price range, even if they are not handled by your brokerage, so the buyers are able to make their own comparisons. Offer maps of the area and simple online links that will direct them to detailed information on the web. It is important to keep in mind the concept that an open house event can have a return on the investment, and even though you may not see the payoff the day of the event, the effort you put into making it right can pay off in many ways.

South Dakota duck population gets help from rain

Category : Uncategorized

Thursday, July 21, 2005

A wet late Spring season’s increase in rainfall helped duck populations rebound in the northern Great Plains near the U.S.-Canadian border. A dry Winter and resulting low ground water levels threatened duck nesting grounds in the area.

Much to the relief of duck hunters, who feared a possible 2005 ban on duck hunting, the most-recent waterfowl survey released this week by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service showed duck populations in South Dakota on the rebound.

This contrasted to a May survey that showed fewer ducks and waterfowl nesting areas in the state with the population of breeding ducks numbering 1.6 million, down from 1.7 million in 2004. The same May survey indicated that duck habitats, specifically ponds, had declined more than 35 percent from the historical average.

However, late Spring rains reportedly improved wetland conditions and irrigated grasslands for grazing duck broods and re-nesting hens. The figures are used to set duck-hunting limits for the fall season, which begins in August.

“I have observed many duck broods across eastern South Dakota in July, and grassland cover looks great statewide,” Spencer Vaa, a waterfowl biologist with the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks said in an Associated Press report.

Cambridge, Massachusetts —Construction of two condominium buildings and a five-acre park began on March 21, in East Cambridge, Massachusetts. The buildings and park are part of the 45-acre Northpoint development, which will take 15 years and more than $2bn to complete, according to the Boston Globe. The buildings, designated as “Building S” and “Building T” by the planners of the project, Spaulding & Slye Colliers, have been designed by local architectural firm Childs Bertman Tseckares and Architects Alliance from Toronto. Buildings S and T are the first of an eventual 20 buildings planned at the site.

The development will fill what used to be a railroad yard for the Guilford Rail System, a subsidiary of Guilford Transportation Industries. According to Hoovers.com, Guilford is controlled by Timothy Mellon, heir to the Mellon banking fortune. Guilford Rail Systems has its headquarters in North Billerica and owns 1600 miles of railroad throughout New England. The tracks in the Northpoint plot have been removed, though Boston subway’s Lechmere station remains within walking distance of the site, along with parts of Boston and Cambridge. The site is bordered by Route 93 on its eastern side, Monsignor O’Brien Highway to the west, and the Gilmore Bridge to the south.

The landscape architecture of the park is provided by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, a landscape architecture firm on Concord Avenue in Cambridge. The firm’s principal teaches in Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. MVVA is also completing the landscape for Harvard’s Northwest Science Building.

Can I Really Borrow Up To $5000 With Bad Credit?

Category : Seniors

With the economy worsening with every passing day, many folks (and you may be among them) have lost their jobs and been unable to find work that pays their customary salary. Although this is a hard working group of Americans, some of them have let their credit slip because they couldn’t make all of the monthly payments that they were accustomed to paying when they were fully employed. No matter what situation drove your credit score to a low level, you can do business with a bad credit lender and you can borrow up to $5000. Almost everyone who applies will qualify for some type of loan, minus the hassle that is usually given to bad credit borrowers.Money To Pay Expenses NowBad credit personal loans are written out and issued to those individuals who have less than perfect credit, and you can borrow money for many needs. It could be that you need to pay bills that have become past due, pay your credit card debt down to a more manageable level, or even buy new appliances or pay for renovations to your home. From holiday expenses to funding a vacation that is much needed, your bad credit loan in amounts as much as $5000 will help cover your needs, including those unmet by your regular paycheck.Qualifying For A Bad Credit Loan Up To $5000Lenders of bad credit loans for those borrowers in your financial situation require that you have income that is steady, either from wages, retirement, Social Security, or disability and that you have acceptable collateral that can be used to satisfy the security requirements of the lender. While a home is the best collateral that you can use, lenders will also accept a newer model car, truck, or SUV as a security pledge. The lender that servicers your loan will place a lien against the property, home, or vehicle that you use for collateral; that lien will be removed once the note or lending agreement has been satisfied and repaid.Borrowers Without CollateralBad credit borrowers who do not have collateral to pledge often find it more difficult to borrow money. There are also borrowers who do not wish to risk losing their collateral in this rough economy. For these types of borrowers, there are options that can allow them to receive funding without collateral. The most often used option is to apply with a cosigner. A cosigner simply agrees that they will pay the loan off if you do not. Anyone can be a cosigner for you. There are also unsecured personal loans that can be obtained without a cosigner or collateral. Be prepared, however, to pay a higher interest rate and to be allowed to borrow lesser amounts of money than if you had a cosigner or collateral. These types of loans are called signature loans, and the lender bases your ability to repay the loan solely on your word that you will do so and your income. In these instances, married couples (if both are working or both have income) should apply jointly on the loan application so that the lender feels that you have adequate means to repay your obligation as well as your other monthly bills, which they will also look at.

Ford, Fiat to produce small cars together

Category : Uncategorized

Friday, September 9, 2005

Italian-based Fiat Auto SPA and US-based Ford Motor Co. announced they signed an agreement to cooperate in designing two small car models. This came only seven months after General Motors severed their relationship with Fiat.

Both companies plan to work together on a new version of the popular Fiat Cinquecento and on a replacement for the Ford Ka, both to be based on the Fiat Panda platform.

The cooperation can help reduce the companies’ small car production costs and ease financial difficulties they are facing. Ford is struggling with high labor and health care costs, while Fiat suffers from its unprofitable Italian plants.

After the deal was announced, shares of Fiat rose $0.06 to $9.44, while Ford gained $0.06 to $9.95 on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
